But someone buddying up with a base stager is super reasonable (and literally a canon thing via the Village of Dragons), doubly so when Dreepy is explicitly a weakass shitter who would NEED help/direction from others to strengthen itself. There's nothing indicating they have generally bad dispositions like a Deino could, or that they're rare as fuck like Beldum.
Now, you could argue that being a delivery man should cut into training time and make it an even bigger stretch for a teen (which I would agree with), but then I raise you every trainer with a full time job or that is literally the same age while being a league member expected to handle trainers of all kinds even though you just fought them at the start of your journey and swept their geodude or w/e.
tldr; criticize shit for either not explaining things reasonably or not finding a way to maintain your suspension of disbelief without a direct explanation, DON'T get offended because of your headcanon being challenged..
