I have over 100 of most types (and several hundred of a few) with absolutely no hacking done and a swath of comp mons built from near scratch in every season of play but the current one. The CURRENT EVENT gives them out like candy.
It's not any more inconvenient than farming Dynamax Candies, which people never bitched and moaned about

If you're feeling off on a specific mon/archetype, you can search online for a code (via any of the numerous VGC Youtubers, tourney-winner rental codes, comp corners of social media, or even on Smogon) and sus it out in battle and see if you want to go through in investing. Not only is the info on meta trends more visible than ever, so is the means to get hands on experience.
