>>54259356No, it's not equivalent. The reality is that it's a fucking game and you sit, or at best stand, to play it. It doesn't make sense for a game to be inaccessible (to play) unless one of three conditions are fulfilled:
1) The barrier to entry is like a tax to convince someone not to do it in the first place and actually contribute to society in some other way
2) The publisher needs to make money to survive
In this case, TPCI doesn't make extra money off the extra time invested, so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for anyone involved. I work my ass off when I work and have no problem paying for what I want with money I earn, but that doesn't mean the practices of a business I'm supporting are logical. Equipment I buy can keep me healthy, but a Pokémon game is just going to age into irrelevance. I obsess over this game because it has borderline infinite potential compared to other ones, but I'm also not alone in thinking that GameFreak and companies that work with them handle it horribly from every angle except profit generation. And all that said, I'll play on Showdown to get my immediate gratification so I have more time to work on whatever else I want, such as writing essays to people who are going to reply to me in 2 words on /vp/.
