>>54260548It blew my mind as a kid when Brock joined the team and the first thing he did was catch a fucking Zubat. I was like, "can he do that???" Then I realized it's really stupid to think a Gym Leader should be so one-note. I really like how Volkner has an Octillery because he lives by the sea, it makes sense that he would have some Water-Type Pokemon because of his location even if that's not his preference or specialty.
Also surfing is kind of like martial arts if you think about it.
