pokémon as a franchise is carried by its designs. the battle system can be fun, sometimes (not in the mainline games that's for sure) but the rest of the game mechanics (breeding, training, exploring for new "lore" (crap)) all suck ass. pokémon has good monsters but it is NOT a good game, and I can't blame anyone for focusing on the only half-decently designed aspect of it, which is high-level battles.
