The Stadium/Colo/XD/BR series were their way to showcase Pokemon battles in full 3D. By gen 5, I guess they already had planned that the next generation would be in 3D (the 3Ds came out a few months after) so I guess they didn't bother.

Yeah, LGPE actually sold very well compared to most Pokemon remakes. Emerald only cracked 7 million and even HGSS was about 12 million. LGPE was 15 million. That is barely behind BW and Kanto has already been remade twice.

It's crazy how poorly XY sold. Newest nearly-launch first gen games on a brand new super popular system. And it barely outsold BW and SM, both 2nd gen games on handhelds overrun by piracy by the point those games came out. Yikes.
