Why do these games in particular feel like such drag to replay today compared to RSE?

i cut frlg some slack because they're the first remastered games, so a lot of the gameplay until blaine is just RBY but less easy. also, there's some weird design choices like non gen-1 evolutions and breeding being locked to post-game.
imo though i think it's the best stand-alone kanto experience; the sevii islands are really cool, and the game picks up once you can surf

I think my main problem is the gen 1 restriction. I would’ve liked to play through the game with some gen 2/3 Pokemon but like all the other versions of Kanto, you’re only allowed to clear the main campaign with the original 151. But I agree that it’s still the definitive Kanto experience.

it's a glorified remaster of their most successful game that only came out 6 years after the original and avoids changing or improving on it in any way

the release date cannot be stressed enough, imagine if the next game to come out in current year was a let's go remaster

It's probably due to the fact that it's used as the main rom base for most fan games and that it's tileset is the default pokémon essentials one. It's just become generic over the years.

Because they purposely did their best to keep them the closest to the originals and the least innovative possible, contrarily to gen 3 that was the first real attempt at making something new and also a semi reboot.
They were my first pokemon tho and Im glad I got to start with the best gen 1 game yet. I still mostly come back to this when I want to listen the Kanto's soundtrack, due to it adding character and refining the sounds from the originals and due to lgpe being shit tier orchestra autism that doesnt even try to fit the sounds with the soundtrack.

I agree with most of your post but it's not quite fair to bring up the time gap between RBY and FRLG. Yes, it was only 6 years, but the hardware and mechanics jumps from gen 1 to 3 were much bigger than those for Legpiss to Scarlet and Violet or even XY to Sword and Shield.

it's strange because i think by today's standards it would be a good remake, but it's just totally unremarkable in every way, even when it tried doing new stuff with sevii islands it just didn't land for some reason.

Kanto is a suffocating and boring region. not really as adventurous as Hoenn because most of the region has already been urbanized, so at least the Sevii Islands are more of a breath of fresh air

The anime really spoiled people on how Kanto could have been, which FRLG fails to capitalize on. Unfortunately most depictions of Kanto would be derived from these set of games.

The biggest problem is I find no reason go outside the standard "good" mons for a regular playthrough since it's already agonising enough with the new abilities/mechanics
whereas in gen1 everything has a gimmick or something to abuse/unga Bunga your way through victory and the stats don't matter nearly as much with the old dv system

I think they're pretty great
t. played from Gen 1

The graphics are good
You get a bunch of neat bonuses like sprite CGs of the locations when you enter them or sprites of giving pokemon items or jamming TMs on their foreheads
Sevii Islands are fun and expand the base
VS Seeker is fun
Extended Lorelei content post game (Very nice)
You get to trade the pokemon into newer games and Gen III
Elite Four rematches were great
You get Gen II pokemon as well
Kanto is just better

The Kanto palette kind of sucks dick and the encounter and trainer tables weren't changed up enough so there's a lot of saminess without the old school G1 charm of the originals.
Its still pretty solid but it can feel a bit slow when you know the game backwards and forwards.
