Generation 4 and generation 5 are closer in design to each other than any other generation. I'm tired of pretending like there is a major difference between them.

Unova is actually slightly more similar to Johto in terms of how you progress through the early game

Yeah dude I remember how Johto funelled the player through a straight line map and had roadblocks after every Gym and a dialogue dump every 5 steps just like Unova.

Route heading north > optional side area with trainers > 4th Gym city that is in the center of the region but not the biggest

That's about where it ends though. Interestingly, both Johto and Unova have split paths at the 4th Gym going both east and west, just Unova did nothing with them.
