Not to mention all the memes and Poketuber activity, it almost felt like Gen 3 times again. Then Dexit cut off a ton of older fans who lost their favorite mons in Pokemon Home because they mistakenly thought they could be transferred over, and the franchise just never managed to regain its relevance.

Sword and Shield sold better than any prior Pokemon game, silly. It's still the best Pokemon game, and if Gen 10 repeats the bedshitting act Gen 9 did it still will be.

They're a good indicator of quality. Good things sell well, bad things don't. Sometimes there are flukes, but in the case of Pokemon that's usually the result of the previous gen affecting things. SwSh being so good meant lots of people bought SV expecting more of the same, which was a shock when it turned out to be dogshit. And BW being so bad meant XY underperformed as a lot of people were turned off the franchise.

In terms of sales, the only objective measure of quality, I suppose so. After all, "artistic quality" is entirely subjective and cannot be objectively quantified.

But pokemon is the biggest franchise on earth, it seems impossible to gatekeep. Before 2016, it always felt like the mainline games were the focus of the franchise, and thus the fans of the series were the people who were really into the games and everything else as a whole by extension. Now? Pokemon has lost some of those fans and are now overwhelmed by normalfaggots.
