We've seen what happened with Gen 8, where various new lines did get a gimmick form from the outset. Now these lines fill incomplete, and appartently GF seems to think so too, what with two of these lines receiving a new evo only a generation later already.

Heliolisk has abilities for three different weathers like it should have weather forms, it also has normal type for no reason

everyone in this thread is either overthinking it or just plain retarded. The most defining factor on on or a Pokémon got a mega is how much Game Freak themselves values that Pokemon. With a small caveat on whether or not that Pokemon would step on CHARIZARD's toes in anyway.

There was an interview done in the lead up to XY where they said the reason they weren't giving Kalos Pokemon Mega Evolutions is because they wanted fans to get to know them on their own first. I also think, and this is more a personal speculation, that they wanted to use Megas to give older Pokemon new and refreshed designs and/or power boosts as no Gen 5 Pokemon got them and only a spare few Gen 4 ones did.

I don't think you can consider them bland when they clearly have multiple inspirations that make up the design. Blandness is reserved for things that are just "animal but recolored" not things that might be smaller or have a lack of spikes on them
