Pokemon are an inherently integrated part of this world, even for people who don't participate in battling. Any place of work you'd apply to is going to include pokemon as your co-workers. Rotoms are integrated into just about every machine you can get your hands on. And of course there's simply having one as a pet.
It's perfectly normal to not care for pokemon battling in the pokemon world, but someone refusing to interact with pokemon period while living in the world of pokemon is ludicrous.
