God exists and is all powerful, but chooses not to make it obvious, because he'd rather other develop their faith on their own. He does that presumably because it's more interesting to watch than the alternative.
Of course, many dispute the existence of god, because the Babel fish exists. If god were to go hands off and not make his presence known, why would he then go out of his way to make the Babel fish, a fish that seemingly confirms his existence irregardless of faith?
