Kadabra: Star on forehead, big tail, stripes on arms and tail, and red lines on crotch.

Alakazam: A second spoon.

How did they fuck up the evolution this badly?

The spoons matter alot in amplifying the abra line's psychic powers (e.g. Alakazam getting two spoons, the mega getting way more). Sacrificing a useless tail to lighten the body and make moving it with psychic powers easier is a no-brainer.
