You can screw with your opponent's options by setting up bad things up for them (EG. Stadiums, abilities, etc.), but there will be no surprise abilities being procced.
Some cards do allow the defending player to do *something* when it isn't their turn, but the opponent will have needed to do something by choice to proc that ability.

SV will be renowned as feeling like gen III again. We have Tera cards like Delta Species, and a return to Stage 2-ex monsters. As soon as the SwSh rule box cards are rotated out, the game can finally heal.

On just an art level I think ex cards will be way more sought after than Vs. In a lot of base Vs and VMaxes the mon is just kinda standing there, while pretty much every base ex art has the mon in some sort of action pose. They’re just way more fun and dynamic.

It's basically just a more power creeped version of the ex era - desu Tera still using the normal typing's energy for moves means they're not quite 100% Delta Species, but they're close enough, and even more wise Delta Species came about through crystal fuckery too.

I haven't enjoyed the TCG this much since Gen 5 so admittedly there's a degree of nostalgia factoring in, but they've learnt some lessons from the SM and SwSh TCG eras clearly
>promo cards have Cosmo foil borders again, they've brought back the original pixel holofoil too
>the card layouts themselves have darker and lighter shades of the type colour on them, very reminiscent of the Gen 3 card layouts (hard to explain this)

They've brought back Cosmo foil, it's been used quite heavily in SV especially since the promos have Cosmo foil borders now. And the Annihilape ex box has promos with the original pixel foil. The basic energies in 151 will be pixel cosmo foil and they'll likely start using it in sets again for Pokémon too.

They're pretty similar to EX but you can actually see backgrounds on these ex cards, unlike EX where it was exclusively just particle effects and a 3D render most of the time. The Obsidian Flames Miraidon and Miraidon also have cool artwork, they're actually more similar to Gold Stars from the ex era in how the artwork could fit into the box but breaks out slightly. They've had a good split of drawn artwork and renders for SV so far, I don't even hate the 5ban stuff as much as I usually do

I'm a kid that lived through the first pokemon craze and I saw utra pokemon hype only 3 times in my life.

Plus it seems that Nintendo Switch in general had more normies and kids into Pokemon games. Switch is such a popular console and the Sword and Shield era was popular during Switch hype.
So people are attached to Sw/Sh not only because of cards but because of games too.

To ruin a whole market you have to overflood it with items in a quantity of retail stores.

Even if there are many ivnestorcucks hoarding for example.... 20-30 Evolving Skies etbs, it won't be enough to ruin the market in the future.

After all - it's just some investorcucks hoarding a few boxes. Not a whole bunch of official trucks stuffed with THOUSANDS of pokemon boxes.

So yeah....
buy as many stuff as you want. Focus on Sword and Shield only.
Nobody gives a fuck about Scarlet and Violet (it is investable as any pokemon product but not as good as sw/sh). Sword and Shield era is heavily attached to 2020 and best years of Nintendo Switch

Vintage is boring.

So that means vintage cards fail miserably compared to modern art.
Plus vintage are either 3423940840918120 moneys on shitty looking charizard or.... not that expensive cards compared to modern cards to be honest.

A lot of modern cards cost $50-100-200-300 and a lot of vintagecuck cards cost nothing.

So I guess I'd stick to stuff that looks better.
Plus the next generation won't care about vintage stuff because they never lived through the 90s like some dying boomer.

The thing with Komiya is that it really didn't feel as self-referential. His newer shit just feels like some corporate board asked for a new Komiya(tm) product to put in an arthouse, not a genuinely fun and zany card like pic related. Opinions on old Komiya (or new, or both) may differ, but there's a lost quality in how not-deliberate his older work feels. Every bit of it feels whimsical and amateurish, but with great composition, and you don't really feel the former. That Gengar just made me genuinely sad to look at. Also, he has some good cards still, but it feels like he's been using the same exact style for the past 6 or so sets.

I guess maybe the implication is that his back spine is straight up slicing through reality itself as he evolves? i'm collecting komiya and am a huge fan of his work, and sadly i have to agree. he made some stellar cards in sun/moon but the vast majority of what he did since swsh is garbage, it's the same trippy stuff. it's plain, boring and ugly. like the drowzee art rare, the frigibax is good other two aren't my thing. i like what he did during vending, gen 2 and gen 3 the best.

Local card shop near me removed all their tables since covid and now there's nothing but cardboard boxes everywhere; probably product that they don't have a warehouse for. Just visited since pre-covid and I'm curious as to how this store is still alive at all. There's space for 1 person to move between all the boxes and that's it. Overpriced singles and suddenly he's way more into pokemon since the boom and there's barely any other products aside from sports cards and pkmn. Is the guy rich or something? Store looks like it's a ghost town with 0 players and customers now.

collecting in general is a hobby
spending money to create a collection of a certain "thing" out of enjoyment of that thing is fun, especially the social aspect of being able to enjoy it with other people
what you can gain out of collecting is always different between collectors, which is what makes it so much fun to begin with
for example, i collect any and all delibird cards. soon i'll be collecting iron bundle cards as well. when i started i just got one of each art, and now i've been collecting variants for cards. this led me to discover the boundaries crossed delibird has SIX fucking variants (normal, reverse, and 1st/2nd/3rd/4th place pokemon league prints).
a lot of the fun of collecting is stuff like that, in my opinion. the story that some cards have, the research that goes into figuring out the collection you want, finding the cards you're looking for, etc.

See, this is a collector, and there's a thrill to an esoteric hunt like this. For me personally, I collect any and all Cosmo holofoil cards. This is admittedly a lot broader or a scope than Deliberds and Iron Bundles, but the point is that there has to be some kind of connecting thread.

I had assumed they just went for the sort of glass kaleidoscope look for Charizard because he was the first tera special illustration, but this is a really disappointing trend. There's so much fun stuff you could do making use of tera typing with an alt artwork . These may as well just be slightly fancier full arts.

I actually kinda like it conceptually. Having the big headliner ex cards get a similar art style (mon in the center surrounded by their new element) could make for a neat page of the collection when the era’s finished.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but the opportunity cost is too great. We could have had Garchomp bursting from a geyser or flooding a canyon, or simply diving through a pretty undersea environment. The current Tera SIRs should have just been the default full arts. It'd actually make full arts a bit more desirable while adding a bit more flare to the chase pool, and it'd leave the SIR slots for more creative pieces.

I normally buy cards straight out but I got a paldea evolved before I started bulk buying them and Im very happy with what Ive gotten so far. The bulk actually adds up since I buy almost the whole set. I might only have $26 in expensive cards 1/3 of the way though the box (going to open them 1/3 of the time though the weekend) but Ill probably save an extra 20 in bulk buying since every bulk card is 5-10 cents. Going to buy a box or two of every set before I bulk buy form now on. That and opening is fun. Gambling is fun.
