Not much background is needed to get into a new pokemon game. You need movies + shows to get into the new Marvel Movie and therefore into Marvel Merch.
Pokemon has so many skews to get into it: GO, TCG, Game, Anime, Marvel really only has Movies and Shows.
Pokemon is very kid friendly and isn't really a part of the cultural war so they grow up with the franchise. Disney and through affiliation Marvel is geared more towards slightly older people, and is involved in the cultural war.
What this means is that Pokemon's popularity will eventually fall, but it will be easier to sustain it at a higher level. Marvel movies have not done that well lately at the box office which isn't a great sign for the future (Disney makes good money on them through ancillaries though!)
