From what I can remember, that was as a direct reaction to dog/cat flamewars back in the day. Most not involved in the shitposting started calling them beasts, but a few started calling them gerbils as a funnier nickname (source, I started calling them gerbils for a bit because of the mental image of them as gerbils).
