Nintendo. they wanted Pokémon 2 in 1997 and kept badgering Game Freak for it, so Game Freak kept handing up "new" games for Nintendo to sell, while trying to unfuck the new project.

For the international market, Pokémon has been a series since 1998. Since then, years without new main series titles have been:

Not to be niggardly, but that means roughly a quarter of Pokémon’s lifespan has been spent without a yearly release, which I think is enough to dispel the yearly release myth, especially with how evenly distributed across the series lifespan the gaps are.

If we’re going off of Nip Time then the series has been active since ‘96, and the years without games have been:

>2003
>2005
>2007
>2011
>2015
>2020
>2023
In which case, that’s exactly 1/3 of the time Pokémon has not been a yearly release.

I think the more interesting question is what has led to this myth? The disillusionment of life blurring our perception of the passage of years?

Regardless of how you see it. they released a "new" game for sale wich add new areas to play through, just as rehashes were "new" games set in already-introduced regions which added new areas to play through.

Not like Zelda Tears were they could afford to delay it by a year. There’s no TCG or anime on a schedule that heavily ties to the release of a new Zelda.
Development of the games requires more time now were development of other pokemon products doesn’t and is causing a conflict in release schedule. Remember GF only makes the games, the Pokemon Company calls the shots and they want money

Gen 10's not coming '25, new Gens wait two years after a new console release and there's not going to be a new console this year. I can see an LGPE-type thing that launches on the new system in '25, but it won't be Gen 10. They know the 30th anniversary is '26 and they know a new Gen is marketable as fuck, before tying a 30th birthday party celebration on top.

Anon, everything works to Game Freak's lead. TGC doesn't start work till GF releases finished pokémon for dispersal through the franchise to start work on producing their parts of the new Gen.
Delays are costly as all hell, especially for single-IP franchises headed by independent developers. nintendo looked at the numbers and decided they could afford a delay for TotK - they don't have a kiddy merch empire tied to it. But Gen 3-4 proved the brand stagnates without new shit and Game Freak would rather not have to delay and fuck the conveyor belt again
(as the whole machine would need to kick their heels like in Gen 3 when TPC needed to start hyping Gen 4 with side game apps for new pokés).

Just because they phased out their shitty practice of re-releasing games doesn't mean that DLC counts as a new game, updating an existing game takes significantly less resources and time than a full game release and is also offered at a cheaper price

Anon isn't entirely incorrect. The success of shit like Pokemon Go means that the mainline Pokemon games are no longer the main product, and largely just exist in order to add new Pokemon and characters to the franchise that can be turned into toys and merch and Go updates.

Pocket Monsters 2 wasn't planned for 97 but 1998 but the Anime became really popular giving new life to the Gen 1 games and Pocket Monster 2 development was harder than expected with the addition of having to make International Versions of Red and Green which became the Red and Blue we know today. By then GF was like we won't be able to make Pocket Monsters 2 by 98 maybe 99? And then with the popularity of Pokémon in International markets more time was focused on other ventures over Pocket Monsters 2 which later delayed the game to 2000 in Japan. By then the game was a different beast being called Pocket Monsters Gold and Silver removing the 2 from the title.

The bundled price for SS was $90 dipshit. There's no "reduced price", they sell the DLC at going rate for DLC, the games cost $60, every fucker who buys game+ DLC spent $90, assuming they didn't use a game voucher or buy under some kind of discount.
So yes in fact, it DOES mean they haven't changed their shitty practices, as they're STILL working to two releases from new Region in first two years of Gen.

And laughably, you're still pushing GO, as if GO isn't deliberate.ly dragging out releasing pokémon, to ensure they keep an audience (I remember launch year. They too too fucking long to add new 'mons so a whole host of people dropped it, some even for good). Or did you forget Ishihara stalled Gen 4 shilling, despite having all his ducks in a row and waiting on Game Freak, who'd fucked the devcycle that time out? Because they all move omn Game Freak's say-so and always have ()because they started adding side games to promote the series, while waiting on Game Freak to make the next multi-million seller game).

And the international engine was Blue version, which wasn't fucking hard to do (because in Pokémon lab in Cinnibar, a scientist will trade you. After the trade, he references Jpn Blue's trade, by saying "Electrode went and evolved!" as it was originally a trade evo in Jap Blue.
I'm almost 40 dude. I know what happened in Gen 1, as I was nosy enough to go looking about its history 15 fucking years ago.
