I’ve never went through the Battle Frontier in Emerald.
Is it really difficult? I’m wondering if I should do a regular run of the game, or do a difficulty romhack considering the main game up to E4 is pretty easy?

It's been like a decade since I've completed it but from my memory most of it isn't too bad.

Pike is very easy.

Dome, Pyramid, and Palace aren't that bad.

Arena and Tower are a worth challenge.

The Factory is straight up bullshit and a nightmare.

Ignoring the Factory (pure RNG) and the Palace (horribly mechanics) the Frontier isn't that bad difficulty wise. The problem arises from how long the streaks are, which leads to fatigue and panic which can mess up your thoughts, and there's always the chance of getting screwed over by something holding a Quick Claw. Overall you'll get pretty far simply by having a Lati and not putting garbage on your party. I'm not sure why people put Calm Mind on Latios though, you get way more consistent results with Psychic/Thunderbolt/Dragon Claw/Surf because believe me you want guaranteed KOs on Rhydon.

Ive used both and I feel like there were a lot of moments where surf latios felt really underwhelming without the CM boost desu.

I loved it. Completed it a few years ago at this point and it was tedious to do it legitimately, but I fucking did it. It was such a glorious victory that I couldn't quite play any other Pokémon game after taking a few years playing Emerald. Absolutely kino, especially if you play on cart and have to trade to get your team. It might actually be the series peak for you if you really enjoy battling.
