>>54403853>Stumbled on an interesting project that fixed and/or improved all of gen 1 designs. I'll post the whole dex and artist commentary, tooop man it's okay to say this is your own work, you'll get more honest criticism that way
i think calling anything more than a handful of these mons an "improvement/fix" is being really generous. It's not fixing, it's just reinterpreting based on the english names, which is fine, but i wouldn't say any are particularly better than they were before. The Charmander, Ekans, Nidos, Paras, Mankey, Gastly, and Krabby lines are especially controversial being called "fixes" when some stages look less cohesive at best and overly cluttered and discordant at worst. Embracing fan-theories like with Ditto is just bad design logic. Embracing later design principles can be good, but with Mewtwo it just comes out bad and messy. Adding hair and accessories to pokemon should be done sparingly and to highlight the themes of the mon, like Hypno's talisman and Alakazam's spoons, but very few of these textural additions feel natural—Snorlax being the worst offender. I do like how the Pidgey and Spearow lines came out though, the added colors makes them feel more like natural birds which is sort of what they were aiming for in Gen 1. Adding gender differences for Clefairy and Mr. Mime was also good desu. Just be honest with yourself next time about reimagining the designs. It's fine to reimagine things.
