If I'm remembering the correctly, gen 5 was mostly Masuda's baby, and though correct in his reasoning behind a dex cut/reboot, players were still bitter from having to leave their bros behind in the gen 2 to 3 jump that nearly killed the series and didn't like the familiar mons being banished to post game. He's been assblasted ever since, and him leaving Gamefreak is possibly the best thing to happen to the series so far.
