Yes, there was a lot of criticism back then, but it was mainly about the series stagnating, as the image shows.

It added more in than it took out. The Day/Night cycle was a relatively minor exclusion that also improved QoL because it meant that there were no time-locked encounters in Hoenn.

A variant of the zelda cycle meme is absolutely applicable to pokemon, as much as people here whine about it being made up. Every gen since pokemania died has received the exact same complaints regarding pokemon designs and whatever new gameplay mechanics they decided to add/cut.
