Caught a new batch of 6 for the DLC before doing any story content. Will evolve them only after the rivals have evolved theirs.

Did you raise a new team?

Yes, I finished it with this team that I prepared a shiny team before arriving in Kitakami.

The last 2 slots were supposed to be filled with shinies from Kitakami, but no shinies appeared.
Was a fun playthrough nonetheless

I already had the Scyther & Varoom, both of them were shinies that would otherwise rot in a box. Their new TM moves made me want to use them. Everything else was freshly-caught and was kept unevovled until Kieran had his Poliwrath.

Just used my old team, I kinda wish you could smoothly start fresh in the DLC and treat it as a separate adventure until you've beaten it but playing with high level unevolved pokemon who already have their complete moveset and who will evolve as soon as they level up once isn't fun.

Went in with lvl 40 mons with 80% of the paths done, saw everything being lvl 10 so I just caught stuff and currently going with Poochyena, Yanma, Corphish, Makuhita, Rockruff and Ralts (okay the last 3 were actually mons I had caught earlier on and didn't really touch)
I am embarrassed to admit that Carmine's stupid teacup was a problem cause Poochy isn't exactly a top tier dark type lmao

Based for using Ekans and Corphish. Levelling with the rivals is a good idea, kind of wish I had done that. I brought my guys in already evolved so I've decimated nearly everything so far. Carmine just fought me with a fully evolved team though so might be good from here on out.

Is catching a new team actually viable for the dlc? I've wanted to do this but didn't know if it would just be me enjoying a new team for only a few hours before I finish everything there is to see.

If you're already in postgame and everything is level 60+, sure. You get evolutions incredibly fast that way, which is handy because the region is loaded with Unova mons.
