Not sure how that would work unless you wanna manage multiple teams (about 30+ Pokemon). At most you'd probably get to decide their tactics (don't faint wild Pokemon, focus on defense,etc.)

Maybe they get 6 but you can have them pick between two at different intervals in their story. Or they have like, 9 you can collect all through the game and you can switch them out
