The way Pokémon games have done roadblocks has almost always been awful. I'd rather be need an HM or even be told that "You can't leave now! You should really do [story event] first!" before I get roadblocked by a random asshole standing in the road for no reason.

I don't think this started until gen 4 or 5. In gen 1 the closest one I can think of is the security guard who won't let you past because he's thirsty.
There's also the old man who won't move because he's too drunk to get up, but that gets a pass for being funny.

The earlier gens were pretty good about it, but that's why I went out of my way to say "almost always." The earliest one I think is notable is the guy oogling his own footprints in Gen 3, but it went downhil particularly in Gens 4 and 5 like you said.

We're not going to get anywhere if we list off the vast plethora of issues that plague the current Pokemon games, so I've got a counterproposal.
I'll go ahead and use a game that's actually good as a basis, then we can work off that.
Go ahead and play Puppet Dance Performance: Shard of Dreams. Then take into consideration these complaints about that game.

Balance types like Pokemon Gen 1-2 does, which is to say you should allow some types to have worse type match-ups in exchange for having access to specific strong utility moves (such as grass types getting Sleep Powder, or Ice types having the overpowered Blizzard and immunity to the deadly Freeze status)
>Make sure the designs communicate typing, ambiguity is frustrating in a game about type match-ups. A really good design should also communicate what a monster's stat spread probably looks like. Make fast mons look fast and high hp mons fat.

please put some meaningful monster interactions in the game. like maybe let me dress them and walk around with them or anything cool like that. not this fake shit that doesnt matter like amie. not that i dont like feeding and playing or washing. its just done in such a meaningless way where it feels like its not part of the normal game. whatever you do dont make the monster use abilities in the overworld that force me to walk with something i dont care about like in monster sanctuary. dont make random monsters permanently shit in battles. put fishing in the game (actual fish to collect). let me build a base. let me play as a masculine muscle dude or a cute feminine girl or whatever like in pbr. not just this androgynous blob shit without any other choice like in the main games now. would also like a game that doesnt feel like it only has fighting to do and nothing else. gives me burn out from pokemon really fast. let me delete eggs. give eggs actual unique colors instead of just using one fucking sprite. give npcs actual schedules instead of just standing around all day.

give me npc quests with their own story that show me what your world is. dont give me annoying forced friends or companions i cant reject. dont treat me like a child. dont force me to play as a child. let me say no to shit if i get the choice so dont just repeat the cutscene forcing me into a yes. make monsters feel alive with their own behaviors and schedules in the overworld rather than just fucking walking around. let me change the colors of npcs like maybe its just me but i feel like if someone wants an all black/asian/white or whatever game they should be able to do that. also the npcs race thing if forced on the player always derails discussions and i hate that. let me skip cutscenes. let me speed up the battles if its the same grindy repetitive battle system like other rpgs do. let me ride my monsters. let me build little pens for my monsters instead of just the dumb box system. in general just give me reasons for why i even want to do shit. meaningful rewards etc. and make the game feel alive.

Mainly Dexit, overpriced DLCs, and being on the Switch.

I would also like to see more NPC variety in Pokemon usage.

Yeah the roadblocks could be framed better than “I’m doing [thing] come back later,” but games like these have to have roadblocks.

My only big issue is the extreme possitivism of current pokemon, I miss casual evildoing and cruel things.

I just want things to be...normal, I want the rival having kind of confrontation not sucking your dick ane being super friends, I want evil teams to get back to be evil teams that do evil things.
