I suspect if they made a new region based on a region of Japan it would be required to be Diverse and I do not know if Gamefreak staff would be willing to go along with that.

Also if it is based on Japan the high level staff cannot take a prolonged holiday abroad on company money for "research".

So they have little incentive to make a Japan based region these days.

The real life kitakami has a population of 100,000 people and is known for a sword dance. Didn't see that anywhere in the dlc

Wow satan, I didn't know Pokemon didn't even have Kanto.

On an actual note, a single town(because yes, JP directly just calls Kitakami a town) is a small chunk of region and probably doesn't interfere that much.
Kitakami is the type of area you could omit at worst anyway.

At this point they might as well use remaining Japanese prefectures (lands) for DLC and additional areas in Legends games. Teal Mask failed to foreshadow anything about a greater region surrounding or including Kitakami. It's likely that we're dealing with several lands rather than 2-3 regions. How is a region defined? By having 8 gyms (or an equivalent), as far as trainers are concerned.

Sinjoh is also a land rather than a region. I used to think it corresponded to some mountain in Tohoku, but now I think it corresponds to the Japanese Alps (close to Mt. Fuji/Silver). That would make it easy to include as a biome in a Legends Johto game.
