Although to be fair, Diantha's easiness is largely due to you having access to Megas + XYs level curve.

Most champions before Diantha had at least some role in the story of their respective games, even if it was a minor one. Lance in GSC helps take down team rocket and is essential to catching Lugia. Wallace gets you into the Sky Pillar to catch Rayquaza. Cynthia gets you through multiple roadblocks and guides you through the Distortion World. If you count N as a champion, we had a story where the champion was one of the main antagonists (which was also kind of the case with Blue).
