Is it because of genuinely good writing or the competition being just that garbage? People were already talking up the base game rival trio being good but I think they trump even them.

It's because you actually spend time with these two and see their personalities, and how they handle themselves and each other. Not like Nemona who only shows up to say you're awesome, and Penny who uses you to do her dirty work. At least you team up with Arven, but even then it's the same thing 5 fucking times with him.

I think it's both. In the previous games where you totally crushed the rival's dreams, GF seemed too afraid to actually demonstrate any sort of antagonism towards the MC for it. They almost did with Hop but he fell short going the Sonia/Professor route accepting being in your shadow despite his whole motivation throughout the game being getting out of his brother's shadow. In TTM, Kieran gets legitimately upset with you and the fact your're so strong and stealing his dream of befriending Ogrepon. If they don't pussy out last second in Pt 2 of the DLC, then I think Kieran will take the crown as the number one rival in Pokemon.

I think it's because I care more about what happens to them story wise. They can still ruin them but for now I am looking forward to the next DLC. Of the original trio I only really thought that Arven was decently done. It help if any of the newer rivals got an idea of a truly competitive team to make me think they were rival material.

When people talk about how much they enjoyed the main trio, I think it's because the last impressions we got of them was the Area Zero mission, where Penny and Nemona got to be something more than their role in their respective path as mysterious hacker/senpai and actually be people. Once we learned about Mabostiff, Arven became more than the kooky chef guy after crazy legends, and Area Zero simply built on a already decent foundation.
I think Carmine and Kieran are resonating immediately because the DLC story from the start is building and developing off their tropes they're introduced as.

Yeah but there's so little development for Nemona and Penny. At least Penny gets the team star stuff and her room neet jokes but Nemona? She has rich parents that she doesn't care about or w/e it's never touched again. She's just female Goku for battling.

What direction/resolution for his character would you consider as them pussying out? I cannot see him being antagonist and bitter towards the protagonist until the very end, but him not being a servile bitch while trying to 'keep up' in the post plot rematches would be alright.

I expect they won't keep him bitter forever but I'd prefer it to be a believably gradual process

I think they will make Kieran stop be this resentful towards MC after we defeat him at the end (implying he's actually the champion which is very likely), but because he realizes that while being bitter somehow helped him get stronger, it is not a negative purpose what makes a good trainer.
I think maybe it'll be something like "I lost because I was so obsessed with wanting to defeat you that I forgot to take into consideration my Pokemon's feelings".
Because by being prompted by hatred rather than love, he basically started using his Pokemon as tools.

I hope he will have some more development throughout the second DLC (like maybe being nasty to us and an obstacle throughout our journey) rather than being mostly a static encounter after the E4.
