Tera is bad. In fact, I'd argue Regulation D was least fun I've had in Pokemon in a very long time. It was better before they added the ruin mons, but they just made shit worse. Tera is fun in raids though (when you don't get Iron hand spammers)

A problem made worse thanks to Tera. I will never forget when Gamefreak showed it off for the first time, and they had Ghost-Tyranitar as an example. Tyranitar ended up being one of the worse Tera users in the game because it can't even take advantage of it's own ability. and gets fucked by it's own sandstorm. The list goes on, but I'm tired seeing the same shitty mons in ladder. Sadly doesn't look like much will change in Reg E, but that's hardly a surprise.

Mega Evolution isn't a gimmick, Gen 7 started gimmicks.
Mega Evolution was a permanent new mechanic added that was sidelined in Gen 7 and abandoned fully in Gen 8 due to those regions having shitty gimmicks they didn't want Mega Evolution taking the spotlight from.

It was originally intended to be a core mechanic of the franchise going forward, adding a new layer of depth to the battle system. To call it a gimmick puts it in the same league as Z-Moves, Dynamax, and Tera.

Ok it failed. Nobody cares, it's in the same mechanical category as Z moves Dynamax and Tera, a super move you use once per battle as your "ace in the hole" people refer to those shorthand as gimmicks.

SM locked the mega ring to post-game and the stones to events, the anime nerfed them to high hell, allowing regular bog-standard pokémon tach them and they stopped shilling mega merch for Z-Move related merch. SM also sold about 5.5m more than USM while locking the mega stones to a single-time distribution event (USM giving them out freely for VGCucks). Considering the gimmicks have been improving with each gen, getting more universal (everyone can use it instead of just a select fex), and more dynamic (you can do it at any time and aren't locked into it before the game by an item), the gen 10 gimmick will probably be fine.

Never cared about comp, because being an adult caring about pvp in a kid's game more weighted to shifting merch of the creatures than being an engaging adult competitive experience is a bit sad.
Megas were still the worst gimmick because they only let 48 out of 721 pokémon access it, vs 808 in SM, 650 in SS and roughly 700 in SV being allowed to access base gimmick, with the super speshul gimmick form change being relegated to shillmon, instead of trying to buff shitmon AND push the super new gimmick with shillmon.

Anyone with a brain, or without late stage Alola cancer, doesn't consider Megas a gimmick because they're willing to acknowledge it was introduced as a permanent feature of Pokemon going forward. No more of a gimmick than Double/Triple battles, Held Items, Abilities, Phy/Spec split. Then again the cancerous Gen 7 removed all of those too, so I guess they're back to being gimmicks.

If anything, Z-Moves did the smart thing by making it so that every mon could use them but certain mons got fancy attacks rather than special forms; it's much less of a rich get richer situation and gave the starters much more prominence unlike the bad hand anyone not named Greninja got.

They didn't fail at all, VGC is always like that. If you check omgon you would see maybe 2/3 of the megas were viable in OU, and the other 1/3 were banned. Megas were a sucess, megas and zmoves were viable together. The problem is that they now want to make new gimmicks that can only be used once but do not require you to use your item slot so you can use them at any time. This would not be balanced with megas and zmoves mixed in. So, something had to go, and they decided to remove everything old, gimmicks and Pokémon were cut just so they can sell new mechanics without worrying about whatever they released before. Pokémon is ded in spirit, now it's just a corporate zombie.

megas lasted 2 generations and them being removed in swsh coincided with dexit. if megas got introduced in gen 3 and double battles were a new gen 6 gimmick then GF would axe the new gimmick because obviously older normalized things get priority

One generation. They existed in 2 but only shilled as "the" gimmick for one. The other Gen, they locked it to post-game, so only about 1.6m actually had a chance to encounter it.
And let's not forget the kiddy advertising program constantly had Z-Moves going over megas in SM, as opposed to the season before, where they BEGGED Game Freak to make a bangle gimmick version of Greninja, instead of shill an older Mega he'd had because they decided only megas could kill megas. Bro Gamefreak doesn't give a rat's ass what Smogon does. There's always some degree of centralization but megas were so ridiculous it was just not possible to not use the most broken ones and have any reasonable expectation of winning.

Megas had the best chance of being good because they could be tailor made to make shitmons great or give top tiers sidegrades. Game Freak fucked it up by making obviously broken megas, shit megas to some shitmons, and giving straight upgrades to mons like Salamence.
