Casual fans are stronger than ever but the hardcore fans, the ones who are also autistic enough to do that kind of job (for free) are becoming more and more rare, be it because they're leaving the franchise because of the reasons you've just stated or simply becoming older and having better things to do in their life than caring about Pokemon creatures.
Another understated issue is that there's not enough people coming in to replace those oldfags who're leaving the franchise. You cannot compare the knowledge, experience, expertise, know-how and even passion between zoomers and boomers. Someone who knew what the Pokemania was and lived through it is plain and simply a bigger and better fan than a zoomer who hadn't even starting growing hair down there when they found out what Pokemon was midway into Gen 6/7.
