Pokemon's sprit has died a long time ago. The franchise has become a cesspool of garbage and there's virtually no means of salvaging it as it has veered far too deep away from it's essence.

Even if it had competition, at this point the people running the series would only continue to further destroy their own series to avoid said competition. Yo-Kai Watch virtually destroyed any elements of this series that were aimed at adults when it blew up in Japan, because the people running Game Freak are hacks and will always learn the wrong lesson and do everything they can to snivel and weasel their way out of spending serious money and putting serious labor time into their games.

Game Freak changed that design doctrine because they saw the only serious competitor Pokemon has ever had taking off in Japan primarily because it was targeted at very young children and jangled keys in their faces to hold their attention. So Pokemon followed suit.
Like many modern Japanese IPs and businesses the people steering the ship at Game Freak are mainly there as a result of office politics and have no actual specialized knowledge of their industry or franchise, and nor do they care. Their job is to not rock the boat while the money printer goes BRRRRRR and they will continue to shave off any bit of identity or niche audience appeal their product has to pursue Disney levels of mass popularity. The effect is just especially notable with Game Freak because Tajiri et al barely knew what the fuck they were doing in the first place.

Mew was the biggest reason it took off in Japan because of the mystery surrounding it and I'm the West, the anime helped by releasing first.

Emerald is the best game in the series, i agree.
