I've never tried PvP in Pokémon before. How do I do it and not get my ass kicked?
Playing S/V. Also, how do I make friends on the Switch so I can try the co-op feature? I rarely use the Switch.

I'm pretty new to comp but I've always found it fun to just start with whatever Pokemon you got and see how it goes. Use an in-game team or maybe some raid Mons if you have them

Do some research. Find a play style you like for a mode you like and then build a team for it.
The main modes on cart are vgc doubles and the battle stadium singles. You can also play 6v6 singles too but I think that's more of a smogon thing.
The main styles of play are weather (sun, rain, sand and snow), Trick Room, hyper offense and stall. If this is your first foray into competitive then I recommend rain as its traditionally the best weather and honestly the most splashable to other play styles

If you're on cart most of your enemies will be literal children so just use fast strong monsters with moves that cover most types
