As long as they toned down the Abilities and stat gains on some of them, most would be fine. I'd still probably keep Megas exclusively on 3-stage and Legendary Pokemon, the 3-stage limit is as old as Pokemon itself so it'd feel genuinely wrong to break it, and I'm still in denial over them adding normally evolving Legendaries in Gen 7+.

I can understand that since that slogan has pretty much been the reason why Gamefreak is the only company in the world that continues to get away with selling the same game twice.
Fire Emblem tried with Fates but they did the mistake of making two games that were actually different instead of just copy/pasting code with slightly different encounters. Still ended up catching them all at least a few times though

dynamaxing doesn't change a Pokemon's ability and type like mega evolution can. It can open up completely new ways to use said pokemon, such as waiting to mega evolve a Manectric so it can proc Intimidate at the right time, or switching Banette from a glass cannon into a support Pokemon that can hit like a truck if need be. Dynamaxing railroads a pokemon into a single niche.

Megas were the only battle gimmick so good that it lasted for more than one game, and continues to survive through spin-offs.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Tera again though, in a game that isn’t broken and buggy. It reminds me of the old Delta cards.

Megas will always be loved the most because they're the most "high effort" and conceptually exciting gimmicks, and if one of your favourites got one, it's basically the equivalent of your favourite getting a new evolution and super saiyan and all that shit. It felt unique and cool.

However as a battle gimmick it's inherently flawed. It's limited to a select pool, often already powerful Pokemon that didn't particularly need a further advantage, and everything else just existed around them. If you didn't care for the megas that exist? Then you straight up just won't engage with the mechanic.

Dynamax and Tera do an overall better job as "battle gimmicks" by changing the flow and things to consider in every battle and involving every Pokemon. There's a lot more dynamism (lol) in those mechanics compared to Megas, on top of everything being able to engage in them. But since they're "lol it just gets bigger" and "lol it has a dumb hat" they'll never be as beloved by the average player as Mega is.

Dynamax is easily my least favorite of the gimmicks just because a lot of the mechanics surrounding it feel so arbitrary. You can't Encore them, you can't Destiny Bond them, flinches are useless, weight based moves are useless, you can't switch them out in most scenarios, and plenty more. It just feels like a big, dumb beatstick that encourages you to use your own big, dumb beatstick to fight against it.

That's the point. It's a general purpose strategic choice for battles. Do I need weather control? Then I dynamax a Pokemon that knows a fire/water/rock/ice move. Do I need to block their sleep status effect? Then I dynamax a Pokemon with a fairy or electric move. Do I need to outspeed my opponent? Then I dynamax a Pokemon with a flying or normal move. It lets you pick your gimmick user on the fly instead of being locked in before you even get to the team preview screen. If your mega had a bad matchup into their team your options were either fight with one hand behind your back and not bring your mega, or fight with the other hand behind your back and bring it into a bad matchup. You could always find a good dynamax user even if it was maxing just to survive an attack that would otherwise KO you.

Megas were a once-per-battle gimmick designed to sell toys first, and working team building and battles second. Dynamax was a once-per-battle gimmick designed to work well in team building and battles, but without the ability to sell new toys (hence the need to add special GMax forms).

Megas had good bones and people were speculating that eventually they'd add more and more each generation. Z-Moves were okay even though that was an evolution of the Type Gems in Gen 5 so no one was necessarily clamoring for a system like that. Dynamax was gay and Tera is an interesting gimmick but very hard to play around

The main thing is Megas have one restriction, and at the very least Knock Off has its uses against something holding a mega stone. When you add so many restrictions you need to look up a wiki to figure out exactly what they are, it comes off as inorganic. What's next, you can't burn them if it's raining on the night of a full moon while Mars is parallel to Uranus or some shit?
