Gold (Gen 2) is a very...how do I say this, "of his time" design with the big hoodie and shorts, while it's not as if these characters have much going on from a writing standpoint, at the very least he looks like someone who would skateboard (a cut feature) and the personality he was given in the Adventures manga fits like a glove.
Also "Red expy" is far from an insult, Red's design is simple, practical and can look cool in the right circumstances, Hilbert, who I'd say is closest to Red's design, also has an outfit that's both practical and cool looking. They're urban wanderers and absolutely look the part.
