>>54548613I think people are looking at this the wrong way. It's not necessarily that he abandoned them because they were too weak. It's more likely he recently caught Cramorant on his adventures and started raising Sentret shortly before/after meeting you. This causes him to associate them with you. In a way it's supposed to mirror how he feels with Ogerpon and how he can't get her without going through you. Also, all of his other pokemon have some sort of relevance to the oger besides these two, reflecting his obsession.
In particular notice how his team doesn't start to change significantly until he is committed to defeating you. This can also be seen with Driplin, who you'd think would be an easy cut, but we know is going to get some corrupted arc with the next DLC. It's also his only pokemon that really has any connection to you still when you shared candy apples with him.
