>>54561637When it comes to language practice, at least for me, so far Yokai Watch > Pokemon. Kanji with furigana is much easier on the eyes for beginners than Kanji or kana alone. But yeah, in general learn kana ASAP, get some solid base of Kanji (n5 + n4 levels should be enough), grab basic grammar and vocab along the way (again n5 + n4) and you're pretty much good to go to learn mostly from games and other media using textbooks and other sources mostly as reference and figuring out new kanji/vocab/grammar that you encounter naturally during gaming/watching/reading/listening to media. Language acquisition by playing and having fun is so effortless after a while that you make great progress when it barely feels like learning.
That's how I taught myself English (thank you, Pokemon, Golden Sun and Phoenix Wright) and it's the same approach I'm taking with Japanese, so far so good.
