I legitimately wish they'd code affection bonuses into NPC teams. Doesn't make sense they parrot the "love and treat your pokémon well" but treat their own like data points and damage machines.

Honestly i wouldn't mind that since it would lessen clean sweeps since it would probably just be a free focus band/sturdy for "Bosses" like Gym Leaders and what not who really shouldn't be as sweep-able as they are.

unironically I would say yes. They're actively engaging with their pokemon outside of battles, basically surviving in the wild with them given that the anime did (when I watched it at least) make it seem like towns were multiple days' journeys apart from each other, even removing the time spent on bullshit interrupting Ash and the gang.
