hitmonlee hits harder and hitmontop does support better so hitmonchan is the awkward middle child

Hitmonchan does have better coverage moves since he learns all the elemental punches.
He's also the only one to learn drain punch, but he's not really bulky enough to make much use of it.

Since Fighting was a meme type in gen 1 anyway, they should have given Hitmonchan high Special Attack instead of Attack so it could use the elemental punches (which it already learned all of by level-up).
This would have gotten it cucked by the split in gen 4, though, so I guess it would still be a total shitmon.

Ran a few numbers with Smogon's calculator since it allows you to change base stats, 105 Special Hitmonchan in Gen 1 still would not have gone very far, sadly. No +0 non-crit Psychic can take it out in one hit, even Mewtwo's, and Zapdos Thunderbolt would be a 3 hit KO. But the elemental punches would still be too weak against anything with a special stat; ice punch is a 3HKO on Venusaur. I'm curious if there would be a low-tier niche a fighting type that could also hit low-Special Pokemon.
