I miss the third legendaries being unrevealed prior to their release. Finding this thing and Kyurem (and Rayquaza by extension, but I was too young for Ruby and Sapphire's release) was so exciting

anon, this was literally last gen
to the point when leaks appeared shortly before release, a blurry version of picrel was rumored to be eternatus

this gen they literally excluded the third legendary from the game so it doesn't leak, and the funny thing is, it could still be dokutaro instead of terapagos

Zygarde, Necrozma, Eternatus and Terapagos weren't revealed before the release of their games, though? I guess you could argue for Terapagos, but people were still theorizing over its existence for like 3 or 4 months before the reveal of the DLC because of in-game evidence.

He was just a kid going on his journey with pokemon creatures like every kid in pokeworld does. He just had the gumption to become champ and got caught up in all the rocket and mewtwo stuff by coincidence.

I'd have preferred if it wasn't directly involved with the main plot and instead had an actual playable alternative form in DLC1/DLC2

Revealed before its release, though if "Dokutaro" ends up being directly involved with the main lore of SV like >>54603097 suggested, that would be great.
Essentially I just want them to be mysterious post-game encounters that later get embellished through additional lore.

Giratina's encounter would be really scary for someone who doesn't know about it. Suddenly a new lake appeared. The lake has weird music.
Inside the cave you only find ghosts.
The sleeping one? What is that?
What kind of creature is that? Why does it have horns?
Catched it. It appears in an old cemetary according to the pokedex.
Did I catch the grim reaper?
But I knew about Giratina because of the wiki before that.
The wiki already existed in the mid 00s.

Sure the events were written as an enjoyable narrative so they weren't really coincidental since the devs intended for them to happen so the game would be exciting but from the main character's perspective he just happened to be on the scene all the times rocket mooks were up to no good and was just exploring a cave full of souped up powerful pokemon when he met mewtwo

I get what you mean but I struggle to think how an RPG storyline can both be fun and not have some degree of chosen one bullshit. Specially when you're supposed to fill a dex and meet legendary creatures in the process.

SwSh for once, barring the climax, did the realistic thing for the bulk of the story -"stuff is happening but don't worry the champion is on it, continue you path" and it was the lamest shit ever. If I wanted realism I'd just quit games and retreat to my corporate job

That's what I'm asking, I don't remember any of those Pokémon (Rayquaza, Giratina, Kyurem, Zygarde, Necrozma, and Eternatus) being shown before their base game was out.
If OP is just talking about them not being revealed in the story and getting to experience "find this scary fucker in a cave somewhere with no context" then that applies to all of them except Rayquaza and Eternatus.

The third legendary is also the box legendary of BW2 and USUM, is what I was getting at. That meant it was HEAVILY on the marketing.

Barring that, Necrozma was (supposedly) also revealed in the final marketing push before S/M released, though no name was given during this push.

But those are third versions and sequels, they're not meant to be a surprise when you could already encounter them in the base game. They all got special new forms, but the Pokémon itself wasn't new.

As much as I dislike the DLC teases rather than them just being in the game I did quite enjoy the speculation about the Paradox Beasts/Swords and Disk Pokemon. If only they could be found in the base game as is.

it was so fucking cool randomly discovering the Sky Pillar, getting through that hard as fuck maze and seeing a cool and strong as fuck dragon to catch was the most gratifying feeling. same thing happened with discovering giratina even though the dungeon wasn't quite as good.

also don't forget about lugia/ho-oh and mewtwo. finding them with little to no clues was super rewarding and comfy too.
