Prior to Iris becoming Champion was she accepted as the strongest companion before that or is this a recent thing? I recall her defeating Ash and Dawn but would Brock have been 1st place?

She was one of the few logical choices since she was primarily a battler and not a performer or breeder or whatever the fuck Cilan was. The Alola gang weren't even trial captains like the games.
It really just came down to her, Misty or Clemont.
