Plenty of third worlders on this very board learned English in part by playing a bootleg ROM of gen 1/2/3 back in the day. In high school, I played an imported copy of White, but by that point I was already a life-long fan and I could read kana. Last night it occurred to me that if you don't already know what an HM is, it's almost impossible to progress in gen 1 without being able to read the text.
And then today OP posts this, proving my suspicions correct.
