Is this a strat that just automatically wins at team preview? There are a bunch of ways to beat it (have a ghost type, have a rock/steel/ground type, potentially protect stalling) but they're not things every team will be able to do.

Cynthia is not hard, people who think Cynthia are hard only think so for one of 2 reasons

1. they played DPPT when they are a small child and thus didn't know how the game worked properly, dragon type resisting all 3 starter types probably blew a lot of kids out

2. unironically and completely reddit osmosis, they see a bunch of people saying "omg cynthia is soooo hard" and assume its true or fool themselves into thinking its true, its the same thing with Whitney but to a lesser degree

anyways, It's Volo because Arceus has almost no trainer battles and you're obviously going to be underleveled when you get to him, or at least most people will, him having 7 (or 8, doesn't his giratina change forms? I dont remember) pokemon in his team is also ultra fucking bullshit

my favorite trainer battle? its Gary's final battle in FRLG

BDSP Cynthia and the entire E4 is a different beast than DPPT, that gets my vote for hardest E4/champion in the series, especially since it's such a huge spike from the rest of the game which is much easier than DPPT.
The difficulty spike at the end of BDSP is insane, it's like they only realized the forced exp share and affection shit made the game piss easy near the end and then decided to suddenly make a rom hack tier E4 to make up for it.

Why does that matter? I just beat Cynthia a few hours ago and my highest-level mon was 7 levels below her Garchomp.

Misty i guess. Unless you picked bulba. It depends more on what you have available than on the team of the opponent. That's why Cynthia is not hard, by the time you reach her you have access to so many pokemon, moves and TMs that it won't matter what kind of team she'll have, you'll beat her without much problem.

I remember having trouble beating Wallace as a kid but not Cynthia

Upon replaying all the games as an adult I still found Wallace the hardest champion followed probably by Leon. Cynthia is a joke outside of BDSP.

Gen 1 battling as a whole is a whole meme thing, but in gen 3 his team is kino, you play gen 1 if you wanna have fun with glitches, you play gen 3 if you want the real kanto experience, his team is fine and fun in FRLG

They're both hard because they require good coverage. Steven and Lance can get swept with one pokemon. I can't really remember, I know BW doesn't even make you fight the chump and then doesn't BW2 have a dragon champ with only 4 mons? Every game after that is absolute babby mode except for the guy in PLA

I think Red in HGSS is pretty hard, provided you don't grind for ages to level match him. I fought him with my mons in the 60s and it took a few attempts last time I played HGSS.
GSC Red is also hard but badge boosts even the playing field. Aside from Red, I think Emerald's postgame Steven was decently challenging and so is Iris' champion fight in B2W2

The question is about hardest battle, not about hardest champion battle. BW doesn't let you fight champion, but you fight N and Ghetsis instead and their teams are pretty strong. BW2 is Iris with a decent team, althoug you are right that she has too many dragons (she has 6 mons though, no idea why you think it's 4), but then again you don't have fairy type in gen 5.

Here's the thing about Volo though, to progress through the story you basically have to fight/catch tons of Pokemon which gives you experience which makes up for it and they literally give out levels almost for free. It's so much easier to grind in PLA than the main games. Plus you can fight like six Geodude at once, you can wipe out Hisui's entire population of Zubats in a single battle.

volo was definitely the hardest for me, but that's definitely due to circumstance. i've always strictly never used healing items in-battle or during gauntlets, instead preferring to tough it out because that's what i always did as a kid(out of stupidity and item hoarding, mind you)

as such, a functionally 6v8 battle in a battle system that encourages trades and where i'm too stubborn to heal was pretty tough, especially since my team was very frail

Volo got me good too. I think it's aminyl because it's so unexpected. I was rotating my team and not worrying at all about type diversity then all of a sudden you're facing one of the hardest trainers in any game. I think I had 3 ghost types on my team and none outsped Giratina

NTA but idk what's wrong with just using items, they're in the game for a reason. Using them in battles does wack the balance a bit and essentially takes recovery moves out of the game so I tend to not do that, but between fights that's what they're there for lol

Colosseum and Gale of Darkness' final bosses are on another level of crazy (The skillswap slaking shit is going to make you his bitch and Shadow Lugia is only a notch easier than Ultra Necrozma)
Ultra Necrozma isn't a trainer but it still is the hardest pokemon has ever been

Ideally if you see the level 1 cheesemon you set up hazards before killing anything, that way the opponent now has to play predictably if they really want to make the meme strat work. It's also a bit of a fools errand to run a team that doesn't have weather, and also doesn't have a mon that can resist sandstorm in gen 5, home of infinite weather.
This is just under the worst case scenario assumption, having a ghost is also enough to stop Endeavor cheese. The guy in the webm even had the means of handling it as early as turn 2 but he didn't set them on turn 1 instead.

Both of our teams were very balanced against each other, he was strong as fuck, and both of us kept taking each other's pokemon out one after the other, really felt like an intense battle.

I'll never forget how I got his last pokemon Arcanine to a sliver of health and then it got KO'd by his own sandstorm that was still active from Tyranitar and then he just says "NO!"

Im actually gonna be a bit of a curveball here and say none of the ones you mentioned, The hardest battles are the Legendary ones because you are subjected to Catch RNG (Unless you use a Master Ball that you are supposed to get only one off and there are usually more then one candidate for it post-Gen 1) and a A LOT of things can go wrong since it isn't about just winning, it is about winning in the right way (by catching), Now people are gonna go "Spore+False Swipe LOL", but that is exactly it, catching legendary mons actually makes you make that kind of effort if you wanna have a smooth experience, like having Shedinja shut down Kyorge so you can keep chucking the pokéballs. And that is not me getting into FUCKING ROAMERS where you basically only had a couple of turns to weaken and catch.

So for me it would be Gen2 Roamers, Hard to find, no abilities to protect from Roar yet, limited internet so no bad info on how to find them, if you fuck up they are one forever, i was like 11 and already used my Master Ball on Lugia, They were seriously tense for kid me.

I was 5 when Ruby came out and I didn't know the type chart the best Steel was new and confused me. I only had Blaziken and Groudon iirc and Steven's Champion team filtered me for days. I thought they were all Rock or all Steel but obviously it's a combination of both. Anyway I remember a snow day where mom and I were just in the living room dad at work siblings sleeping and I was playing Gameboy and my Blaziken finally made it to Steven's Metagross and instead of picking Sky Uppercut (which must have been the strongest move as it's animation was kick ass in RSE) I picked Blaze Kick for once and hit Metagross for SE and knocked it out letting my retard ass win. I was jumping up and down and my mom patiently listened to me explain why I was so happy idr much past that. Just a happy memory for me. I think I like listening to others achievements because I always had mine heard however small
