Silver is a fan name adopted by some non-GF related media. His actual name is still unknown.

Went digging because I was curious. Couldn't recall if any old guides like Prima gave a name. Special did name him, but trying to ever use that leads to endless squabbling.

According to Bulbapedia
He was first named Silver (Japanese: シルバー Silver) in Bandai's Pokémon Scale World collection, which was released in 2020 (21 years after his introduction in Pokémon Gold and Silver). In 2021, he became available with the same name in Pokémon Masters EX, which was the first time he was named in-game. No definitive name has been given for him in the core series games and their manuals.

Didn't see anything to contradict in a few further searches.

Good thinking. I have an old Versus Books Gold & Silver Adventure Guide (pictured open to the page) and a Perfect Guide (holding it open in the picture). Both have the same text here and do not name the rival.
I recall getting the Adventure Guide around when I got Gold, and later got the Perfect Guide when that came out because it has a Pokedex with base stats, level up moves and TM/HM compatibility lists. Both of these guides are from before Crystal.

This Brady Games guide for Crystal is the same way. It just refers to him as "your rival" and mentions that you get to name him.

You can find out his default name by leaving it blank.
In Gold, his name becomes SILVER.
In Silver, his name becomes GOLD.
In Crystal, his name becomes SILVER.
He didn't have one definitive name, but he did have two official names from the beginning. SIlver isn't a fan name.
