In a franchise with the tagline "Gotta catch 'em all!", getting rid of popular Pokemon for bootlegs will never go well. Plus, it also got rid of contests, had an embarrassing story, was pretty heavily railroaded, and completely tanked everything surrounding the main games like the anime.

The biggest complaints are that some or most Johto mons are in Kanto and the level curve. There are some things, such as breeding that make it retarded, but it was literally the first game they did it in and refined it in the next gen.
