It's kind of a dead end, yeah. Like you said, there's just too many mons and forms now to have all of them in a single game, so if they ever did a brand new PMD, it'd have to be a "dexcut" type of game, but then fans will cry and shit their pants because they can't use their favorite obscure shitmons. Anything Spike Chunsoft does besides a PMD2 remake will be a no-win situation.

Still dont get why it took 2 years to release outside of japan at all.

It might do alright in Japan because they got the original when the 3DS was still relevant, but it was always doomed everywhere else unless they changed everything to be in line with the movie to pander to normalfags, but even then I don't think it was going to do well.

The humans. There's no point making a detective game about Pokemon, where the Pokemon are the suspects and the investigations revolve around them then force in humans and make it so that you need a partner to "translate" (gives vague feedback about) what they say.
It should have just been a Pokemon centric world like PMD and have the chance to explore the gimmicks of certain Pokemon more, nobody in the world gives a single fuck about Tim.
