Now that the dust has settled, can we agree that this win carries a major asterisk? Not only did Leon give him a huge handicap by letting him use unlimited gimmicks, this boy also cheated in round 1 by using an illegal item to completely revitalize Pikachu against Steven.

No M8 example, but for me, one of the best battles was Ash and Korrina rematch, she having a solid strategy against ghost pokemon using bug, ground, and flying moves.

It's not a big deal in VGs, but for the anime it was almost the rule that a fighting type would inevitably lose against ghost or psychic, also I loved how Gengarfags couldn't believe how they massacred their boy "but muh Levitate" fuck you, he lost it in G7

The only "cheating" Ash did was juice Lucario with his own magic aura vs Raihan/Cynthia. He didnt even need that vs Leon.
The worst parts of M8 are:
- all champions except Cynthia had only 1 gimmick, while he has 3
- Lance used dynamax instead of the obvious Mega Gyarados
- ALL main fights were set in Galar to allow for dynamax for everyone

M8 should have had this:
>all matches are 6v6
>all gimmicks allowed in every match, no limit
>Ash reserves with the JN team sprinkled between his 3 teams
>Leon has Aegislash, no need for two fire starters. Also, this is just personal taste but I would have swapped the other Galar starters for Venusaur and Blastoise. Would be nice for Ash's final boss to have the KANTOOOOOOO trio, specially if he got to G-Max all three

Yes, Ash vs Leon was an illegal victory because it deviated from standard tourney regulations, and had external intervention on top of that. I'm pretty sure the writers wanted to send the message that Ash couldn't have beaten him without all of that or they would have wrote it as a straight fight in the first place.

How could Leon have given Ash a handicap when Ash was battling with a handicap the whole tournament? Ash mastered all three gimmicks yet was only allowed to use one gimmick for no reason. Leon wanted to battle Ash at his full strength, which allowed Ash to be able to go all out without needing to be restricted.

This isn’t even just the compfag reason on why it’s worse. Its lore on the (now defunct) XY site from a decade ago mentioned this. In lore it’s a handicap- Gamefreak was playing a sick joke in the flavor text and the stats.

no such thing. This ONE (1) single galar-sponsored tournament was restricting multi-gimmick trainers for no reason, thats it. They didnt even give any reason WHY you cant use more than 1.

The only battles that matter are full power vs full power, even leon could see that. He knew his hypothetical win would be worthless against a restricted Ash

Nowhere else in the anime was using several gimmicks ever banned and even in gen 7 games you could use Mega + z-move together.
