Status effects can be crippling and shift the momentum of a fight, but because pokemon has such a strict action economy and status moves are innately reliant on RNG(typically lower than average accuracy, random activation/duration) there's often little reason during ingame play to spend your turn potentially crippling an enemy when you can just OHKO them with a super effective move instead. On the other hand, a lot of moves have a chance to apply status effects on top of dealing damage, which is even more RNG. I think that freezai dude posted a match where the outcome was effectively decided in a single lucky turn, as a thunderbolt paralyzed the enemy and then made them lose their turn.
Basically they're a meme in low level play and broken in high level play, but RNG can swing the balance wildly in either direction.
