They clearly didn't intend for it to just be a gen 6 only thing since it persisted into LGPE outliving Z-moves not only that but they made frequent appearances in spin offs, which none of the other regional gimmicks did being in pokken, mystery dungeon, Go and so on
Come gen 8 though they removed it from the mainline games and spin offs bar Go and started treating it like they did Z-moves.
