OP, one way to tackle harder Pokemon content is to just play a vanilla game and disallow yourself from excessive grinding, using legendaries, using items in battle. And play on Set mode.
As a general tip, read, read and read all of your options. Maybe your Pokemon has an ability that can turn a battle in your favor (like intentionally getting into Torrent range so you can OHKO stuff) Look at your bag items, maybe Rock Tomb’s speed debuff will let you overcome a tough opponent. Maybe there is a strong item you can pick up early/mid game, like the Choice Specs in Celestic Town. Consider all your options
