The shrinking lore they shoehorned into PLA was a desperate attempt to make Pokeballs seem more humane. Instead of the balls imposing the shrinking on Pokemon, now the Pokemon do it voluntarily to make themselves comfortable. It's pretty stupid, I thought animal rights activists had nothing else to complain about beyond the "lmao fantasy cockfights" angle, a cow that people got tired of milking decades ago, but I guess TPCi has to go to insane lengths to sell the whole utopia image. It's a nonsensical retcon that contradicts so many plot points and minor scenarios throughout the series, so I just ignore it, and so should (You).

I just think it's fucking stupid and creepy, like to a level of "if I knew this was the intended canon when I was like 5 it probably would have turned me off Pokemon altogether." Something about Pokeballs just forcibly inducing a bizarre survival reflex skeeves me out compared to "it's just magic technology that converts them to energy/data and so technically shrinks them that way I guess"

Like I'm not denying it's the stupid canon, I just kind of fucking hate it. It's specifically the forced reflex thing that bothers me, not them being small inside the ball which I guess would happen anyway if they're "energy" too. Though I'm not any of the previous anons in this thread.

It's hard to predict how I would have reacted if I'd known this as a kid, but I think I would've liked it. It always bothered me that they never explained how pokeballs worked in the anime. Apparently, they digitize pokemon, but also we sometimes get to see pokemon hanging out inside their balls, and some like Psyduck can leave the ball at will? Super weird.

I think it's cool and it's a good way to explain why Pokemon society is so much like us despite being far more advanced tech-wise. I just assumed the pokeballs digitized the monsters into the PC, so there's no real shrinking. Then, at a PC, the trainer registers up to 6 signals to their pokeballs so they can send out their Pokemon. That's possibly contradicted by the games when specific pokeballs are connected to specific Pokemon, but I don't really care.

It's actually pretty heavily implied in game canon thanks to USUM that most storage systems are indeed storage systems, when Lusamine chats with Mohn she makes a point about how a Pokemon's fate may be to end up in a PC Box, with Mohn hoping to expand the Poke Pelago to accommodate more Pokemon accordingly.
They're probably not in straight up stasis, but they're definitely not free roaming in a dedicated open range either.

I should note that the shrinking mechanism was part of Game Freak's lore, not Pokémon Company's. You guys seem to forgot that PokéCo is a join holding firm for all three corporations (GF, creatures, and Nintendo), thus they allow the licensor to do whatever they fucking want as long as they follow their strict marketing guidlines.

I'm not citing the anime although some other anons were. I just go off the logic of the world that game freak has presented me: Pokeballs give light when sending/recalling Pokemon, Pokemon can be stored in a PC, Pokemon can be healed instantly by technology interacting with the Pokeballs, Pokemon can learn any move instantly through information on a disc, and that's just off the top of my head. Now, is there anything else besides those 3 specific instances (Japanese only book, DP Lucian, PLA laventon) where any mentioning of shrinking OR ANY VISIAL PROOF of shrinking ever been shown by gamefreak?
