>>54664585Yeah this was a thing. But as someone who grew up with gen 1 i can understand where it comes from.
You really had to be there to understand how huge it was. Imagine every single kid at school bonding over something. And I mean EVERY kid. Even that weird shifty kid you hate getting seated next to on art projects. Whatever. Even them. It was frigging nuts.
Of course being a craze and all, a lot of people grew out of it, though it remained big. When they grew out of it, they didn't notice the objective Quality of Life updates the series has had. All they remember is how awesome gen 1 was (and it was) and they see now there's like 1000 pokemon, weird porn of it, and too much shit going on.
If anyone says "but gen 1 had xyz problems/bugs " I'd say well yeah but :
1. We didn't have anything to compare it to, so it was taken on its own merits, and on its own merits its still a very good game despite the bugs.
2. The "balanced" style is more of a "Top Trumps" style with Psychic as the objectively best type and Mewtwo the best monster. This isn't "worse" it's just "different".
3. Remember it wasn't only the gameboy game. The card game was HUGE. And while the card game has also had QoL updates, honestly, the base set is still a pretty solid game. The early season/s of the anime are probably the best ones, too. It was a multimedia franchise remember. You can't just single out the game when all of it contributes.
4. Gen 2 was seen overwhelmingly as a good sequel. It broke in the new mon steadily, letting us first see lots we already knew. Day and Night cycle, 2 new types, (and a more balanced game), pokegear, gender, a breeding system, mystery Gift, the number of additions was truly mind blowing.
Then gen 3 rocks up, cuts out some of my main homies and gets rid of day and night, doesn't let me transfer over my beloved gen 1 legendaries and - I feel this is a big one - for the first time the series has bad music.
So you can see how some defend gen 1.
